Affordable EMDR therapy: why access has been the problem

The most effective trauma treatment in the world — stuck behind a $250/session paywall. That's changing.

EMDR therapy is one of the most effective trauma treatments that exists. It's also, historically, one of the hardest to access.

The average EMDR therapist charges $150–$300 per session. A full course of treatment — often 8–12 sessions — runs $1,200 to $3,600 out of pocket. Insurance coverage is inconsistent. Waitlists for trauma specialists in most cities are measured in months.

The people who most need trauma therapy are often the least positioned to afford it or wait for it.

Why EMDR has been expensive

EMDR requires a trained clinician. The training is intensive — Level 1 and Level 2 trainings, supervised case hours, ongoing consultation. Therapists who specialize in trauma command premium rates because they're rare and in high demand. Sessions run 60–90 minutes; you can't leave someone mid-processing and call it done.

What's changed

Telehealth normalized online EMDR. The research is now clear: outcomes for remote EMDR are comparable to in-person treatment. This has expanded the therapist pool available to any given patient, increased competition, and in some markets brought prices down. It's also made EMDR accessible to people in rural areas and people whose schedules don't accommodate weekly in-person appointments.

Structured EMDR protocols can be delivered by software. For low-to-moderate distress material, the protocol can be delivered through a well-designed app, with the user as their own guide. This isn't a replacement for clinical EMDR — but it makes EMDR-based processing accessible to people who can't access or afford clinical treatment.

HSA and FSA eligibility

Mental health apps that treat a recognized condition can qualify for HSA/FSA reimbursement. Rewire may be eligible depending on your plan. Check with your HSA/FSA administrator — if you have funds available, Rewire may be reimbursable at no effective out-of-pocket cost.

What Rewire costs

$14.99/month or $99.99/year (~$8.33/month). A free trial is available — no credit card required.

A single EMDR therapy session at the average rate costs more than a year of Rewire. That's not an argument against seeing a therapist. It's an argument for having a tool that works between sessions, or for people who are waiting, or for people who've processed the acute material clinically and want to continue the work independently.

The free trial

The free trial includes enough sessions to experience a full EMDR protocol from setup through closure. No credit card required. If it doesn't work for you, you haven't lost anything.
