EMDR resources for therapists: between-session tools that actually help

What clients do between sessions matters as much as the session itself. Here's how to bridge that gap.

Most EMDR therapists have had this conversation: a client is in the middle of active processing work, making real progress, and then disappears for two weeks between sessions. They come back dysregulated, the work has slipped, and you spend the first twenty minutes re-stabilizing.

Between-session support isn't a nice-to-have. For clients in active trauma processing, it's often the difference between progress and stagnation.

What clients actually need between sessions

The gold standard would be daily resourcing: calm place installation, container exercises, some form of nervous system regulation that keeps the window of tolerance open between appointments.

What most clients actually do: nothing, or scroll. The gap exists because there hasn't been a good tool. Worksheets don't engage the nervous system. Meditation apps aren't designed for trauma.

How to describe EMDR to clients

A description that tends to work in clinical intake:

"EMDR is a therapy that helps your brain finish processing experiences it got stuck on. During our sessions, you'll hold a difficult memory in mind while I guide you through a specific kind of stimulation — alternating tones or movements — that helps your nervous system reprocess the memory. Most people find that after processing, the memory is still there but it stops feeling so charged. It becomes something that happened, rather than something that's still happening."

The key elements: it's not talk therapy, it targets specific memories, the mechanism is neurological not cognitive, and the goal is resolution not avoidance.

Using Rewire as a between-session resource

Rewire was built with the clinical workflow in mind.

Referral and invitation. Therapists get a private portal at rewire-emdr.com/therapist.html. You generate an invite link for each client. They sign up through your link, which connects their account to your dashboard.

What you can see. Once a client shares their data with you, you can view: total sessions completed, SUD scores before and after each session (the distress arc), session dates and frequency, and overall trend across sessions. You can't see session content — what memories a client worked on stays private.

What clients experience. A Rewire session is a structured EMDR protocol — setup, target identification, bilateral stimulation using audio tones, processing sets, installation, body scan, closure. 20–30 minutes. Designed for solo use with proper closure built in.

When it works best

For clients with active dissociation, severe PTSD, or material that regularly destabilizes them in session, introduce Rewire carefully and monitor through the portal.

Remote EMDR and online sessions

The research on remote EMDR is now clear: outcomes delivered via video are comparable to in-person treatment. Rewire is a natural complement to a remote practice — clients you see via Zoom can use Rewire between sessions, and you can monitor progress through the therapist portal without any additional scheduling.
